Mesothelium histology

Histology describes observation of the physiological structure of cells within a microscope. It requires staining in the cell to increase contrast and visualize the objective region of interest. The mesothelial cell as a result can be observed and discrete anatomical structures could be studied. Study of histology of any cell helps in understanding the anatomy of it. It is also a means to diagnose a condition progression such as cancer since the histology of a typical cell differs that coming from an abnormal cell.

Structurally the mesothelium is usually a flattened monolayer of cells which are elongated and approximately all-around 25 micron in dimension. The cytoplasm is often seen raised over the centrally located protruding nucleus. As normal epithelial cells the mesothelium lies rested using a layer of connective structure which supports it. The basement membrane as a result, differs in the several main regions where mesothelial cells are found- the pleura, peritoneum, pericardium and tunica vaginalis in the epididymis. There are certain modifications in the cell in different regions that they are found. Some mesothelial cells which are cuboidal will also be seen around the septal folds over of mediastinal pleura and also organs like liver, spleen and sides in the diaphragm.

Analyzing the ultrastructure connected with different mesothelial cells shows features which are different in squamous and also cuboidal type mesothelium. Nucleus is round or ovoid in case of squamous type whereas the cuboidal type boasts a large nucleus with a distinctly visible nucleolus. From the squamous type the mobile or portable organelles are clustered on the nucleus and contains microtubules and also microfilaments, there are few mitochondria seen in conjunction with poorly developed Golgi apparatus with bit of rough endoplasmic reticulum. The cuboidal mesothelial cells have a large number of mitochondria and rough endoplasmic reticulum, the Golgi bodies are beautifully shaped and a much organized microtubules.

Surface modifications much like the microvilli are seen within mesothelial cells. A well-developed microvilli which are diverse in length, shape and number is so visible. The density of microvilli will vary in different organs and also cells. The number also improvements with change in physiological condition in the body which reflects its adaptability. The function in the microvilli on surface of mesothelial cell is usually to protect the cells coming from friction during movement.

Vesicular carry system is well-developed within mesothelial cells. As seen in case of the microvilli, the count of vesicles will vary in different cell varieties. They can be far more in numbers in visceral mesothelium when comparing parietal mesothelium. They are widely-used for shuttling fluids and secretions through the mesothelial membrane.

Studies of cells in a very mesothelial layer shows well-developed cell junctions. Tight junctions which plays an important role in recognizing polarity of a cell is so visible as well as various other structures like adherens junction, distance junctions and desmosomes. Very importantly, zonula occludens has been seen in normal mesothelium.

Significance of Studying Mesothelium Histology

The study of histology of unnatural or diseased cells is termed histopathology. Histopathology of mesothelioma cells provide various insight to the illness and is a methods of accurate diagnosis. Histopathological studies can only be conducted with a certified and experienced medical professional. The study can offer an idea of effectiveness of any chemotherapeutic drug and treatments which are administered otherwise to an individual.

Histology also can offer an intricate view of the cell into the future to a conclusive diagnosis of any disease. Because each disease have a different pathology the cells reflects the difference structurally. Even so, looking at minute information on a cell is usually a challenging issue as unique a cell at minute level is not an easy task.
