Benzodiazepine Overdose

  • Barbiturates were commonly used as sleeping pills in the past.  They are also used in the migraine medication Fiorinal/Fiorocet.  Benzodiazepines are medications in the family of Valium, Xanax, and Ativan.  They are commonly prescribed for sleep or anxiety.

  • Mild overdose
    1. Slurred speech
    2. Euphoria
    3. Unsteady balance
    4. Severe overdose

    1. Stupor
    2. Coma
    3. Respiratory arrest (breathing stops)
    4. Vomit stomach contents in lungs (aspiration Pneumonia)
    5. Low Blood Pressure
    6. Slow Heart Rate

  • Support and protect airways
  • Gastric lavage ("pump stomach") and give activated charcoal
  • Flumazenil for Benzodiazepine overdose

  • If the individual needs emergency medical treatment, Call 911.  Untreated, these conditions can lead to death.
