Cervical Polyps

  • Polyps are small, fleshy pieces of tissue, usually benign, but occasionally may contain cancerous areas. The cause of Cervical Polyps is unknown.

  • Usually none
  • May occasionally cause vaginal discharge or bleeding

  • Visually seen by the doctor during a speculum pelvic exam (a PAP smear and endometrial biopsy should also be performed in the case of bleeding, to rule out more serious causes)
  • Polyps are generally removed by the doctor in his office, without complications. Sometimes a surgical D & C procedure may be required.

  • Cervical dysplasia
  • Cervical Cancer
  • Polypoid neoplastic disease of the endometrium
  • Myomas
  • Endometrial polyps
