  • This is a relatively rare form of cancer. It has the cell type squamous cell carcinoma. It is an aggressive cancer that rapidly spreads from the anus into the sphincter (muscle that controls bowel movements) and up into the rectum.

  • Anal bleeding
  • Anal pain

  • Often unknown
  • HIV Infection may be associated
  • Human papilloma virus increases the risk (seen in venereal Warts as well as without symptoms)
  • Homosexuality -- individuals with this preference are at greater risk of developing anal cancer.
  • Males have a greater risk of developing anal cancer near the outer part of the anus.
  • Women have a higher risk of cancer involving the inner part of the rectum (anal canal).

  • Examination may show:
  1. Mass in the anus
  2. Stool positive for blood
  3. Swollen glands in groin
  • Diagnosis:
    1. Biopsy

  • Only very small tumors can be excised locally.
  • Most tumors:
  1. Extensive surgery from anus into abdomen
  2. Radiation treatment, if patient is not a candidate for surgery

  • See your physician as soon as possible. This is an aggressive form of cancer. The earlier that Cancer of the Anus is treated, the better the chance for a cure.

  • Thrombosed external hemorrhoid
  • Solitary Rectal Ulcer Syndrome
  • Anal fissure
  • Perianal Abscess
  • Anorectal infection
