Barbiturate Overdose

  • Barbiturates were commonly used as sleeping pills in the past.  They are also used in the migraine medication Fiorinal/Fiorocet.  Benzodiazepines are medications in the family of Valium, Xanax, and Ativan.  They are commonly prescribed for sleep or anxiety.

  • Mild overdose
  1. Slurred speech
  2. Euphoria
  3. Unsteady balance
  • Severe overdose
  1. Stupor
  2. Coma
  3. Respiratory arrest (breathing stops)
  4. Vomited stomach contents are inhaled into lungs (aspiration Pneumonia)
  5. Low Blood Pressure
  6. Slow Heart Rate

  • Support and protect airway
  • Gastric lavage ("pump stomach") and give activated charcoal
  • Flumazenil for Benzodiazepine Overdose

  • If the individual needs emergency medical treatment, Call 911.  Untreated, these conditions can lead to death.
