Balanitis

  • Balanitis refers to inflammation/infection of the head (glans) of the penis.  It occurs much more commonly in uncircumcised males.  The cause is usually a candida (yeast) or bacterial infection.

  • Burning
  • Itching
  • Pain
  • Discharge

  • Head of penis appears red, irritated, and may discharge pus.

  • Soak with dilute aluminum acetate for 15 minutes, twice a day.
  • Topical Nystatin or imidazole cream
  • Oral antibiotics if a severe bacterial infection is suspected
  • Urologic consultation if symptoms do not resolve rapidly

  • Careful hygiene especially in those who are uncircumcised -- the foreskin should be retracted and the glans, including the crevice, should be gently washed with soap and water during daily baths/showers.
  • If infections recur, circumcision will effectively eliminate all future infections.
