Blepharospasm is the term used to describe uncontrollable blinking of the eyelid. It is caused by an involuntary contraction of the eye muscles. A blepharospasm is a form of focal dystonia, and is common in middle-aged individuals, often affecting both eyes. The cause is not clear, but it is believed that blepharospasm results from the dysfunction of certain brain areas called the basal ganglia. The Basal ganglia is the part of the brain that regulates voluntary and involuntary movements. It usually begins with an occasional blinking, followed by closure of the eyelids. The symptoms disappear while sleeping, and are worsened by walking, bright lights, and stress. As the disease progresses, the blinking becomes more forceful and may cause functional blindness. Treatment may involve medication, such as botox (botulinum toxin) injection, and surgery. |
