Benign Breast Tumor

Fibroadenoma of the breast

This is a benign (not cancerous) tumor of the breast, usually occurring in younger women in their late teens and early twenties, and twice as often in African-American women than Caucasian women.  It is important that such tumors be biopsied and/or removed to make certain that they are not malignant (i.e., breast cancer).

Lump that is round, firm, movable, non-tender, and usually 1/2 inch to two inches in diameter

Mammography (breast X-rays) Fine-needle aspiration

Surgical removal under local anesthesia

Good, if the tumor doesn't become malignant It can enlarge with pregnancy and breastfeeding.
