Benign Breast Tumor

Fibroadenoma of the breast

  • This is a benign (not cancerous) tumor of the breast, usually occurring in younger women in their late teens and early twenties, and twice as often in African-American women than Caucasian women.
  • It is important that such tumors be biopsied and/or removed to make certain that they are not malignant (i.e., breast cancer).

  • Lump that is round, firm, movable, non-tender, and usually 1/2 inch to two inches in diameter

  • Mammography (breast X-rays)
  • Fine-needle aspiration

  • Surgical removal under local anesthesia

  • Good, if the tumor doesn't become malignant
  • It can enlarge with pregnancy and breastfeeding.

  • Breast cancer
  • Fibrocystic breast disease
