- The bile duct (biliary tract) carries bile -- a fluid made in the liver and stored in the gallbladder -- to the small intestine. Bleeding originating in the biliary tract is extremely rare, unless a cancerous growth or tumor (or a congenital malformation) invades a nearby blood vessel. Trauma to the biliary tract during procedures such as ERCP (Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography) or surgeries may also be a cause of bleeding in the biliary tract.
