Cardiac Syncope

Cardiac syncope means loss of consciousness or fainting due to the heart not pumping enough blood to the brain.

Fainting especially without an inciting cause (such as fright)

Ventricular tachycardia Ventricular Fibrillation Sinus node arrest Heart block (Type II and Complete Heart Blocks) Atrioventricular conduction block Hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy Aortic Stenosis Aortic Regurgitation

Heart and lung exam performed EKG is checked Echocardiogram may be needed

Treat the underlying cause. For example,Ventricular Fibrillation may cause Cardiac Arrest, requiring advanced cardiac life support care to follow (see section on Cardiac Arrest). In all cases, 911 should be called. If the patient does not have a pulse and/or is not breathing, CPR should be started (but if only one person is present, call 911 first, and then begin CPR)
