Cardiac Syncope







  • Cardiac syncope means loss of consciousness or fainting due to the heart not pumping enough blood to the brain.

  • Fainting especially without an inciting cause (such as fright)

  • Ventricular tachycardia
  • Ventricular Fibrillation
  • Sinus node arrest
  • Heart block (Type II and Complete Heart Blocks)
  • Atrioventricular conduction block
  • Hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy
  • Aortic Stenosis
  • Aortic Regurgitation

  • Heart and lung exam performed
  • EKG is checked
  • Echocardiogram may be needed

  • Treat the underlying cause. For example,Ventricular Fibrillation may cause Cardiac Arrest, requiring advanced cardiac life support care to follow (see section on Cardiac Arrest).
  • In all cases, 911 should be called. If the patient does not have a pulse and/or is not breathing, CPR should be started (but if only one person is present, call 911 first, and then begin CPR)

  • Stroke
  • Seizure
  • Vasovagal reaction
  • Medication induced syncope
  • Orthostatic Hypotension
